The line is built for 250km/h operation and runs for 212km from a
triangular junction with the Ankara - Eskisehir high-speed line near
Polatli to Horozluhan, north of Konya. Construction began in July 2006
and tracklaying commenced last July.

At present most journeys
between the two cities are made by road because the only options for
rail travel involve a circuitous route via Eskisehir and Ayfon, or
through Kayseri and Karaman. This means the fastest journey time is a
sedate 10h 30min, compared with around four hours by road. The opening
of the new line means high-speed trains will cover the 306km in just 1h
15min.
