Bombardier's Thunder Bay site in Ontario will begin delivering the
initial batch of 28m-long LRVs next year, and Metrolinx will receive
vehicles from the order announced today between 2013 and 2020.
The 2.65m-wide five-section vehicles will accommodate over 280
passengers, more than double the capacity of existing Toronto trams.
They also feature an active levelling system to ease boarding and
exiting.
In April 2009 the Province of Ontario announced a $C 9.5 billion
funding package that will see five major transit projects completed
over the next 10 years. In addition to York Region's Viva bus rapid
transit project and the refurbishment of the Scarborough Rapid Transit
Line, three light rail projects are planned - Finch LRT, Eglinton
Crosstown LRT and Sheppard East LRT. The 2010 Ontario budget commits
funding to all five projects, although the province has asked Metrolinx
to develop a plan that will reduce the overall funding requirement by
$C 4 billion in the first five-year period.
