The upgrade will relieve the congested Vienna - Leobersdorf - Wiener Neustadt line and follows the completion of the Wampersdorf - Wiener Neustadt and Inzersdorf -Hennersdorf sections.

Münchendorf - Wampersdorf is the only remaining single track section on the route and construction work here will begin in 2020 and is scheduled for completion in 2023.

The project involves introducing a new alignment to the north of Ebreichsdorf which bypasses the town centre with the town set to get a new station. Inzersdorf -Wampersdorf will support 200km/h operation while Wampersdorf - Wiener Neustadt will stay at 140 km/h. The Vienna Meidling - Inzersdorf section will also be doubled in due course.

Once the upgrade is complete, the Vienna - Graz and Vienna - Villach Railjet service will use the new route via Wampersdorf instead of the line via Leobersdorf, relieving this line of from fast trains providing more capacity for S-Bahn and regional train services.
