traction assets on the network while KiwiRail will spend $NZ80m
upgrading the 30 year-old Ganz Mavag emus (pictured).
 
Greater Wellington Regional Council will take over ownership of the
Ganz Mavag and English Electric trains from KiwiRail under the terms of
the agreement. In addition, the regional council will acquire ownership
and responsibility for all stations except Wellington Station, train
stabling and the depot.
 
The government (through KiwiRail) will retain ownership of the metro
rail track network, the traction and signalling assets, and
responsibility for any further investment in the upgradng of these
assets. The regional council will also pay a track access charge to
KiwiRail.
