A pre-series train is operating nightly test runs from the S-Bahn Berlin depot at Grünau in a programme which will cover the entire 327km network.

The main line tests will monitor the functioning of the train control system, the operating performance of the train, and ride characteristics.

Alongside the test programme six drivers are being trained as instructors and will be responsible for training other drivers on the new trains.

DB Regio subsidiary S-Bahn Berlin awarded a consortium of Stadler Pankow and Siemens a framework contract for up to 1380 vehicles in December 2015. The initial order for 106 trains comprises 85 four-car class 484 and 21 two-car class 483 sets.

In June the first train was delivered to Schöneweide depot, where brakes, passenger doors, air-conditioning, windscreen wipers, lights and other components and systems were tested.

Extensive testing has also been carried out at Siemens’ Wildenrath test track in northwest Germany.

The first 10 trains will enter passenger service on Line S47 from Spindlersfeld to Berlin Südkreuz in January 2021.
