The joint feasibility study by German Rail (DB) and U-Bahn operator Hamburger Hochbahn examined two options for serving Lurup and Osdorf: an extension of U-Bahn Line U5 or a new S-Bahn line (Line S32) from Stadionstrasse to Osdorfer Born.

The U5 extension was found to offer slightly higher ridership demand, but the S-Bahn option has a lower construction cost.

According to the Hamburg Senate Department of Economy, Transport and Innovation, urban planning considerations in this densely populated area were decisive and favour the S-Bahn option, which would serve six new stations.

However, the study also recommends extending Line U5 west to Altona Volkspark.
