The 160km line will link Järna near Sodertalje with Linköping and will involve the construction of more than 200 bridges and 20km of tunnels. Trafikverket anticpiates construction will begin in 2017-2021 and commissioning will take place in 2028. The total cost of the project is estimated to be SKr 35bn at 2013 prices and the 320km/h railway will reduce Stockholm – Linköping journey times from 1h 39min to one hour.

Cowi and Systra will provide technical assistance for the third of four packages, which covers the 65km Sillekrog – Stavsjösection with a link to Nyköping and a new station at Skavsta Airport. Systra says this section runs through an environmentally-sensitive area with soft soil, which will pose challenges for the stability of the formation. Package three includes 77 bridges and several short tunnels.
