The project includes the construction of a new 5.3km line, a 2.1km tunnel and a new 400m-long station beneath Stuttgart airport. The line will partially follow Highway A8, and also involves the partial relocation of a provincial road.

Züblin will be technical lead for the project, while Strabag will undertake the earthworks and road works. Start of construction is planned for January 2020.

The project has been given approval to proceed by the Federal Railway Office, which ruled that construction of the line is in the public interest, after a protracted legal battle.

“The project aims to provide long-term, high-performance rail infrastructure, with the integration of the new line and Stuttgart rail junction into the European high-speed network, increasing the track performance of the Stuttgart - Ulm corridor by separating fast and slow traffic,” says DB Stuttgart-Ulm Project CEO, Mr Manfred Leger.

On October 29, DB celebrated the breakthrough of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) on the 8.1km Albvorland tunnel, marking the completion of around 30km of twin-bore tunnelling works for the new 60km Wendlingen - Ulm line, which will halve travel time between Stuttgart and Ulm to 30 minutes.
