THE first daily high-speed rail service, operated jointly by German Rail (DB) and French National Railways (SNCF), started today between Frankfurt and Marseille. The service, which is operated by 320km/h double-deck TGVs and uses the Rhine-Rhône high-speed line, cuts the journey time by 90 minutes.

"This represents a new step towards the internationalisation of rail traffic in Europe," says DB's CEO Dr Rüdiger Grube.
"After the success of Paris - Stuttgart -Munich and Frankfurt - Paris, the new Rhine-Rhône route opens a new chapter in the Franco-German high-speed story," adds Mrs Barbara Dalibard, director-general of SNCF's passenger division.
