The missing link in the Paris-Spain high-speed corridor was shelved after president Mr Emmanuel Macron came to power. France opened the LGV Méditerranée line from Manduel, east of Nîmes, to Lattes, west of Montpellier, in 2017.

However, construction of the €5.52bn line has now been confirmed as a priority.

As with the Manduel - Lattes route, the Montpellier - Perpignan line will be mixed use and will remove around 50 freight trains a day from the conventional route, allowing increases in local passenger services.
