GVB and the municipality of Amsterdam have awarded Nuon/Vattenfall a 10-year contract to supply wind-generated power for the capital’s public transport system.

GVB states that the new contract will result in an 84 million-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions over the duration of the contract.

GVB’s electricity consumption is equivalent to that of 45,000 Amsterdam households and this figure will rise to 55,000 as electric buses replace diesel vehicles.

The operator aims to become carbon neutral by 2025, and in addition to sourcing renewable energy for traction, is also considering installing solar panels on company buildings .
