The project forms part of Brazil´s programme to accelerate growth (PAC).The Reais 1.1bn project should be completed by 2016-17, provided the bid documents are released by June. The line will serve the southern part of the city, connecting Dom Pedro II to Via Dutra. It is expected to transport nearly 215,000 people per day.
There is also a long-term plan to build a 94km metro network in São José dos Campos. If approved, the aim is to complete the project by 2030.
