Stib says extra fleet capacity will be required following the decision by the Brussels Capital Region to go ahead with tram extensions to Neder-over-Heembeek and Tour & Taxis.

The additional vehicles will be of the 32m-long variant.

Stib awarded Bombardier a framework contract in April 2018 to supply up to 175 TNG vehicles based on the company’s Flexity platform, with an initial €169m order for 60 vehicles.

Delivery of the vehicles from the first order is due to start in mid-2020, with the second tranche due to arrive in the Belgian capital from early 2023.

A full-size mock-up of the TNG was unveiled by King Philippe of Belgium last month.
