BONN Transport Authority (SWBV) and regional operator SSB have selected Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF to supply 22 LRVs with an option for a further 10.

According to CAF, the value of the contract is in excess of €80m.

The new fleet will operate on the Bonn city network, as well as regional routes connecting with the light rail network in Cologne.

The CAF LRVs have been ordered to meet rising passenger traffic and an increase in the number of services operated.

The high-floor, bi-directional LRVs will be 28m long, with dimensions similar to the Stadtbahnwagen B vehicles that have been in service for many years on several networks in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

CAF is currently building 51 similar LRVs for Ruhrbahn of Essen, under a contract awarded in June 2021.
