Completion of the project had been pushed back due to delays in obtaining BOStrab approval for the fleet of eight dual-mode electro-diesel Citylink tram trains for operation on the CVAG-owned tram network in Chemnitz, although the fleet of Stadler Rail Valencia vehicles has been in service on the Chemnitz - Mittweida line since April.

With the completion of phase 1, tram-trains are now operating from Chemnitz city centre to Burgstädt (Line C13), Mittweida, (Line C14) and Hainichen (Line C15).

Four further phases are planned, which will ultimately extend the tram-train network to 226km.

A full description of the Chemnitz tram-train project appears in the October issue of International Railway Journal (p34).
