THE European Union has agreed to finance 94% of a Forints 41bn ($US 173m) project to modernise Budapest tram lines 1 and 3. The work will involve the see the rebuilding of Line 1 between Bécsi út and Stadionok as well as several sections of line 3, including the doubling of a single-track section.

In addition, Line 1 will finally be extended over the Rákóczi bridge, which was built in 1995, and through the Buda side of the Hungarian capital towards Fehérvári út via Szerémi út and Hengermalom út.
Meanwhile Hungary's minister of transport has also signed a document giving the government's backing for Budapest Transport Company (BKV) to acquire up to 100 new low-floor LRVs. This document is required for the EU funding application for the new vehicles, which will be ordered in several batches.
