The project was completed three months ahead of schedule and the main contractor was the MPact-Thales consortium, which includes Laing O'Rourke, Grant Rail and Thales.

Services operate at 12-minute intervals Monday to Saturday and between 09.00 and 18.00 on Sundays, with a 15-minute service at other times.

The extension takes the total length of the Metrolink network to 73.45km and is the first project to be completed under the Phase 3b expansion of the system, which also includes extensions to Rochdale Town Centre, Oldham Town Centre, Ashton-under-Lyne, and Manchester Airport. The completion of these lines will extend the network to 95km with 92 stations.

A further 1.6km line is also planned in Manchester city centre, which will provide additional capacity at the core of the network.
