Ground and site investigation work are planned at 25 locations between York Place in Edinburgh city centre and Newhaven by systems and infrastructure contractor Sacyr, Farrans, Neopul (SFN). The work will be carried out in 100m sections and will be completed by mid-July.

The works will determine ground conditions along the new tram route enabling the project's final design can be confirmed. SFN will investigate the ground conditions and depth of the bedrock to determine the depth required for the tram infrastructure foundations and the dimensions of the slab track.

The extension is due to open in early 2023 and is expected to double passenger numbers on the Edinburgh Trams network to 16 million annually.
