The vehicles, which were originally built by Urban Transport Development Corporation, Canada, in 1987 will be upgraded to extend their service life by 15 years. The project will include the installation of new communications equipment, event recorders, and auxiliary power systems.
RT acquired the vehicles as a low-cost alternative to purchasing new LRVs for its expanding network. They will allow the introduction of a limited-stop service on the Gold Line from 2014 and will strengthen the fleet for the opening of the Blue Line extension to Cosumnes River College in 2015.
