ZÜRICH Public Transport (ZVB) has ordered 12 Flexity 100% low-floor LRVs from Alstom. The latest order is from a framework contract agreed with Bombardier (subsequently taken over by Alstom) in 2017 for up to 70 LRVs units in addition to the base order for 70.

The latest batch of 43m-long LRVs, along with an earlier option for 40 vehicles exercised in 2020, are due for delivery in spring 2028. A total of 60 of the original order are now operating in Zürich, with the final 10 due to be delivered by the end of this year.

The price of the latest order has not been disclosed, though the value of the previous option for 40 LRVs was reported as SFr 172m ($US 194m) in 2020 prices. When all LRVs currently on order are delivered, the Zürich Flexity fleet will total 122. An option for a further 18 LRVs remains.

“We are replacing the older generation of Tram 2000 with the Flexity vehicles and are driving forward modernisation,” says VBZ director, Mr Marco Lüthi. “Some of the vehicles will also be used to expand services in order to make public transport in Zürich even more attractive.”
