The €179m five-year contract, which includes an option for a five-year extension, was signed at the end of November 2018 and begins in December 2019. The agreement covers the operation of 1.65 million train-km annually on the Aosta - Turin and Aosta - Ivrea as well as the Aosta - Pré-Saint Didier line, which is due to open during the term of the new contract.

Arriva has been present in the public transport market in Valle d’Aosta since 2016, when it took over the public road transport company Savda. Arriva was Trenitalia’s only competitor in the tender and is disputing, among other things, the award criteria used for the procurement.

The contract calls for the integration of fares systems, opening of ticket offices and a new communications system which will provide passenger information in Italian, French and English.
