During the closure Banedanmark prepared the line for future electrification by remodelling 14 bridges. Lundby and Vordingborg stations have also undergone a major refurbishment while in Ring and Remkolde in South Zealand, track structures have been stabilised and noise barriers erected while several curves have been eliminated in order to increase line speeds at several locations.

Similar work has taken place on the Vordingborg - Orehoved section where buses will continue to replace trains until September 8 and between Orehoved and Nykøbing where buses will continue to operate until September 29.

Plans to reopen the Næstved - Vordingborg line on September 2 were delayed due to a problem with the signalling system detected after the official reopening on August 31.

The work is part of the DKr 9.5bn ($US 1.4bn) upgrade of the 115km Ringsted - Holeby line, and is part of the overall Fehrmarn Belt project, Denmark’s largest infrastructure project, which includes the Fehmarn Belt tunnel between Denmark and Germany.

Further upgrade work as part of this initial stage of the project will include track doubling between Vordingborg and Nykøbing, including the construction of a second single-track bridge across the Masnedsund south of Vordingborg, with this stage due to be completed by 2021 at a cost of DKr 7.5bn. The line will also be resignalled as part of the Danish national ERTMS programme and track will be upgraded for 200km/h operation. The final DKr 2bn section involves track doubling and electrification on the section between Nykøbing and the northern portal of the Fehmarn tunnel near Rødby.
