The Delhi - Panipat line was initially designed to terminate at Panipat North, but will now be extended to Karnal with provision for a station in Gharaunda as well, giving the 103km line 17 stations. The Haryana government will cover Rs 50bn ($US 704.5m), or 16%, of the $US 4.4bn project.

Eight RRTS corridors are planned, with the first three to be built between Delhi - Meerut, Delhi - Panipat and Delhi - Shahjahanpur - Neemrana - Behror. The three corridors will cover a total of 291.67km, with 50% running through Haryana state, providing better connections from Gurugram, Rewari, Sonipat, Panipat and Karnal to Delhi.

Upgrade study complete

Russian Railways (RZD) has also completed a feasibility study on the modernisation of the 581km Nagpur - Seunderabad line.

The project will allow operation of passenger services at up to 200km/h along the line, reducing travel times from 10 hours to 4 hours.

As part of the project, RZD subsidiary Russian Railways International has offered Russian technical solutions for track reconstruction, bridges, communications, traction substations, signalling and safety systems.
