THE general director of Mexico’s National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Mr Rogelio Jiménez Pons, has announced that the Mayan Train project will be rerouted around the outskirts of San Francisco de Campeche instead of through the city centre following protests from residents.

The city’s stations will now be located near the airport by the Pablo García and Montilla rings roads, removing the need to relocate houses and businesses in the city centre for the new line. Jiménez Pons says the decision was made following an analysis of costs and time that the relocation process would take, adding that the new route is cheaper and quicker to build.

Jiménez Pons added that an additional transport system will need to be introduced to cover the seven-minute journey from the ring road station to the city centre.
