Shderot station, which was built at a cost of $US 56m, is served by an hourly-interval service to Tel Aviv and Hod HaSharon-Sokolov. The station has a parking area for 400 cars, and is served by two bus lines.

The extension is the first stage of the 60km Ashkelon – Be'er Sheva double-track line currently under construction. The section from Shderot to Netivot is due to open next year with the final stretch via Ofakim to Goral junction north of Be'er Sheva scheduled for completion in 2015. The line between Goral junction and Be'er Sheva was upgraded to double track in 2012 with provision for a third track to be added at a later date. The link will provide a second route from Be'er Sheva to Tel Aviv for both passenger and freight trains.
