The plan includes the withdrawal of the Toronto - Cochrane Northlander passenger service. Politicians in northern Ontario and unions are resisting the sale of the railway, which they argue is a lifeline for a region with few transport links. The 1000km network carries around 320,000 passengers and 3.6 million tonnes of freight per year.
Ontario Northland to be privatised
The government of the Canadian province of Ontario is to abolish the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission and sell Ontario Northland Railway.
