Modernisation work began in 2019, with 84 reserved seat coaches delivered since production began, as well as 25 updated compartment coaches since the start of 2020. However, the announcement of the new target represents a substantial increase in planned output. Traffic on FPK long-distance services has risen in recent years, with an 18% rise 2019 compared to the previous year, and the renovations are intended to improve comfort for passengers.

The renovations will be carried out at the Vagonremmash repair plants in Tambov and Voronezh and will include another 337 compartment coaches and 21 reserved seat coaches.

The refurbishment will include new control systems, as well as new interiors featuring individual lighting and power sockets, air-conditioning and improved toilet and baby changing facilities.
