Under the contract, Trenitalia will increase the annual train-km from 10.3 million this year to 10.9 million by 2021, with a focus on improving services linking the three largest cities on the island: Palermo, Messina and Catania.

A total of €426m will be invested during the life of the contract of which €285m will be funded by the region. This comprises €325m for the purchase of new trains and €101m for modernising rolling stock, IT, and other improvements.

In total 43 new trains will enter service starting in 2019 to add to the six Alstom Jazz EMUs, which entered service in 2016. The new trains comprise 21 Alstom Pop EMUs, five Stadler Flirt EMUs, and 17 DMUs.
