Work began on the project to electrify the lines at 25kV 50Hz ac in November 2016.

New class 385 EMUs supplied by Hitachi Rail Europe have taken over Glasgow Queen Street - Stirling - Alloa services, while class 365 EMUs are being used on Edinburgh - Stirling - Dunblane services pending the delivery of further class 385s.

Scotrail says electrification and the introduction of class 385s has reduced Glasgow - Alloa journey times by five minutes and increased capacity by 3500 seats a day.

A new half-hourly Edinburgh - Falkirk Grahamston - Cumbernauld - Glasgow Queen Street electric service was also introduced on December 9, while the fastest journey time for Edinburgh - Falkirk High - Glasgow Queen Street services has been reduced to 42 minutes with all services formed of class 385s.
