The new trains - which will start operating from 2021 - will be built in Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria, where the new high-capacity Rock trains are already in production.

The framework agreement provides a guaranteed minimum of 70 trains, and Trenitalia says the new sets will improve passenger comfort, offer greater technical reliability and consequently improve punctuality.

The new framework agreement is on top of the €4.3bn investment in 500 regional Rock and Pop trains already in production, which will being operating from spring 2019.
