Campania president, Mr Vincenzo de Luca, Italian State Railways (FS) CEO, Mr Gianfranco Battisti, and Trenitalia CEO, Mr Orazio Iacono, outlined the key points of the agreement during the signing in Naples, with the 15-year contract envisaging the full renewal of the regional fleet between 2020 and 2025. The contract will run until 2033.

More than a half of the investment, €388.9m, is earmarked for the purchase of 37 new high-capacity Rock and medium-capacity Jazz trains, with Trenitalia providing €208.9m and the Campania region the remaining €180m.

The region preferred a direct award to Trenitalia due to the improvements in the quality of service over the last five years, along with the environmental benefits provided by a strong rail-based public transport system.

The investment from FS is part of the 2019 - 2023 Business Plan, which allocates €16bn for rail and road infrastructure in southern Italy, including €8.2bn for rail.
