Work started on the 8.6km seven-station line in 1988 on the orders of the Kremlin, which noted the population of the city had exceeded 1 million and therefore needed a metro network. However, construction was suspended in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union and only resumed in 2005.

Services are operated by a fleet of seven four-car trains supplied by Hyundai-Rotem, Korea.
