There is one intermediate station at Milpitas and the extension is scheduled to open by the end of the year.

Pre-revenue operation involves training and system familiarisation of the trackwork, stations and facilities for Bart operating and maintenance staff. This will be followed by simulated operation without passengers to verify schedules and the timing of trains. VTA will then issue a safety certificate to allow Bart to submit a notice of intent to operate the service to the

California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), to obtain approval to open the extension from the state regulatory agency.

A 9.7km extension from Berryessa to San Jose is currently at the design and engineering phase. This extension will have stations at Alum Rock/28th Street, Downtown San Jose, San Jose Diridon station where it will connect with Caltrans and Amtrak services, and Santa Clara. Both extensions will interchange with Santa Clara light rail services at Milpitas, Downtown San Jose and Diridon.
