The underground extension, which includes one intermediate station at Giovanni XXIII, is part of a project approved in 2006 to extend the metro south to Catania Fontanarossa Airport.
Services run from Stesicoro to an interchange with the Circumetena Railway at Borgo, operating at 10-minute intervals during the day and every 15-minutes during the evening with a journey time of nine minutes between the two termini.
