The contract is part of a Pesos 2.4bn ($US 126.6m) investment in expanding the Nuevo León Metro fleet, which includes an order worth Pesos 1bn for 24 second-hand Dueweg light metro trains from Frankfurt, Germany. All 50 trains are expected to be delivered by 2021.

The trains delivered by CRRC will have an operating speed of 80km/h, and will meet European strength and collision performance standards. The interiors will have a dedicated wheelchair area, along with LED lighting and an HVAC system that can be adjusted depending on the load factor, reducing energy consumption by 30 to 50%. Specially developed wheels will be used to reduce noise by 2-5 decibels.

The trains, which will be equipped with CRRC’s new articulated bogie technology, will be able to operate on tracks with a 25m curve radius.

CRRC will establish technical research and development, project execution and after-sales service teams in Monterrey to support the introduction of the vehicles.

The metro already operates a fleet of 84 trains, and the network is expected to expand in February 2021 when Line 3 is fully opened. The line will run for 7.5km between Monterrey's Macroplaza and the metropolitan hospital in the east.

The governor of Nuevo León state, Mr Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, said that the agreement would enhance the mobility of about 250,000 people. Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo Leon in northeastern Mexico, has a population of 4.1 million.
