Package 5 includes the construction of two grade-separated junctions and 2km of new track, to be constructed while maintaining traffic on the North Auckland Line. Package 7 includes installation of power supply, overhead lines, signalling and the control system for the entire CRL.

The consortium, which includes Vinci Construction subsidiaries Vinci Construction Grands Projects and Soletanche Bachy International along with Downer, Aecom, WSP-Opus and Tonkin & Taylor, was awarded Package 3 in July 2019. Package 3 covers design and construction of the main 3.4km section including 3.2km of tunnel and three new stations.

The alliance style contracts combine the designer-builder consortium and City Rail Link Limited, the company overseeing the project, into a single team to undertake the project. Delivery of all three packages is scheduled for 2024.

The $NZ 4.4bn ($US 2.9bn) scheme, New Zealand’s largest infrastructure project, involves construction of a 3.4km underground line beneath central Auckland, transforming Britomart into a through station. The line will have capacity for 54,000 passengers per hour, and will double the number of people who will be able to access Auckland’s city centre within 30 minutes.

Tunnelling began in February.
