Planning proceedings for the construction of the complete U9 line will also be launched, with a budget in place for this work. Results from the planning process are due to be delivered in 2024/2025. The decisions need final approval by the full council, which is due to meet on October 23.

The City of Munich will contribute €393m to the cost of the U9 station, while €100m has been allocated for planning of the full line. The total cost of the project is estimated at €3.5bn.

The 10.5km U9 will run from Sendling and Schwabing via Main Station to Kunstareal, where a new station called Pinakotheken will be constructed. The bypass is seen as critical to reduce pressure on inner-city routes.

Munich hopes the federal government will offer considerable financial support for the project when final decisions have been taken.

Munich Transport (MVG) welcomed the decision. “The U9 line makes the Munich metro system ready for the future,” says MVG CEO, Mr Ingo Wortman. “It will unburden our network in the city centre, stabilise operations and through that, preventing the metro system from collapsing.”

Last summer, relevant stakeholders such as German Rail (DB), the Bavarian state government, the German federal government, the city and public transport organisations agreed on an integrated solution, which is essential to allow construction of the new line to optimise transport use in the city. A decision was also made to begin partial construction on the U9 station while constructing the second trunk line for the Munich S-Bahn. When both projects have been realised, the new station will be a major interchange on the Munich public transport network.
