The north-south line connects Gucun Park to Zizhu High-Tech Park in the west of the city, serving the districts of Baoshan, Putuo, Changning, Xuhui and Minhang.

The underground line has eight interchanges, connecting with metro lines 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14, as well as mainline services.

Services are operated using a fleet of 54 six-car A-type trains manufactured by CRRC Changchun Rail Coach Company. The trains are capable of driverless operation at Grade of Automation (GoA) 4, and incorporate traction transmission equipment manufactured by Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment.

The line expands the Shanghai Metro network to a total length of 531.5km and is the latest expansion to the rapidly growing metro system, Line 1 of which opened in 1995.
