Line M2 was inaugurated by Bulgaria's Prime Minister Mr Boiko Borissov and the president of the European Commission Mr Jose Manuel Barroso.

The line runs for 6.4km from an interchange with Line 1 at Obelya in the northwest of the city, serving the city's main railway station before terminating south of the city centre at James Bourchier station. Services are operated by a new fleet of 12 trains supplied by Metrovagonmash, Russia.

A 1km southern extension to Hladilnika, and a 3km branch north to Illiyantski are due to open in 2014.
