THE government of New South Wales has selected Bechtel as integration and delivery partner for the $A 18bn ($US 13.9bn) Sydney Metro West project to build a new 24km automatic metro to connect the centres of Paramatta and Sydney.

Bechtel will manage the contractors for each package, providing systems, design, integration and project management services. The consultancy will also work closely with the project and contract procurement teams to develop and procure the various contract packages. Work will also include development, provision and management of risks and interfaces.

Construction on the project got underway in November with the start of tunnelling preparation at The Bays station. The first of four TBMs is expected to begin excavating 11km of twin bore tunnel before the end of 2022. The project is expected to create 10,000 direct and 70,000 in-direct jobs. It will offer a 20-minute journey time and is anticipated to take thousands of cars off the road, easing congestion.

Bechtel is also acting as the delivery partner for the Tunnels, Stations and Excavation package on Sydney Metro, City & South West, with tunnelling on this project concluding in March 2020. A partnership of SNC Lavalin, HKA and Infrastructure Nation was appointed delivery partner for the $A 11bn Western Sydney Airport project earlier this month.
