TfL will go out to tender for the new trains, which will increase capacity by over 30%, later this year, with contract award planned for mid-2018. The trains will provide real-time information, air-conditioning and mobile charging points.
Redevelopment in Docklands has led to increased growth in ridership throughout the area, as in the Royal Docks alone, where up to 36,500 jobs are being created and 7000 homes are being built. Two-thirds of the existing trains, which is over 25-years-old, will be replaced, while an additional 10 new trains will provide more capacity.
“These new trains will enable us to increase capacity on the DLR by 30%, significantly improving the comfort, reliability and quality of our service for customers,” says TfL’s director of DLR Mr Danny Price.
