The first phase of the network was approved by India’s cabinet in December 2016 and comprises the 11.5km north-south Line 1 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area to Swargate and the 14.7km east-west Line 2 from Vanaz to Ramwadi. Both lines are due to open in 2021.

In March Alstom was awarded a contract to equip the two lines with CBTC.
