THE board of Spanish national operator Renfe has given its approval for the creation of a new company based in Paris.

Renfe France will be a 100%-owned subsidiary of Renfe International Projects and will be responsible for developing new business in France as well as Renfe operations in that country.

The new subsidiary will bring together in a single legal entity the different activities that Renfe is currently undertaking in France, which it has identified as a key market for growing business outside Spain.

Current activities in France include bidding for PSO operating contracts, and planning the development of cross-border services from Spain to the southern French regions of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie.

Renfe is also seeking approval to operate its new series 106 Talgo Avril high-speed trains on the French national network, and to expand the scope of its safety certificate to enable its high-speed services to operate to Paris.

Since July 2023 Renfe has operated its own high-speed services from Barcelona to Lyon and from Madrid to Marseille. Operations are currently managed by a subsidiary of passenger business Renfe Viajeros which is based in Lyon.

Headed by Ms Inmaculada Gutiérrez, Renfe International Projects was established in June 2023. It has been set the objective of providing 10% of Renfe’s income from activities outside Spain.
