UTY launched a tender in November 2017 for a contract to supply 18 electric freight locomotives and eight passenger locomotives.

The $US 218.3m procurement also includes the modernisation of a depot in the capital Tashkent.

The Uzbek government is contributing $US 48.3m to the project, which is due to be completed in June 2025.

The agreement to finance new locomotives complements ADB-financed electrification projects in Uzbekistan. In September 2011 ADB agrred to provide a $US 100m loan to support the electrification of the 100km Marakand - Karshi line. The ADB has also provided a $US 80m loan for electrification of the 145km Pap - Namangan - Andijan line.
