Construction began in 2017 but work on the ECRL was suspended in July 2018 after Malaysia’s prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad decided to withdraw from Chinese-backed infrastructure projects on economic grounds.

However, the government announced in April that construction would resume after reaching an agreement with China to reduce the total cost of the project from Ringgits 65.5bn ($US 15.9bn) to Ringgits 44bn.
