With the completion of reconstruction works, the non-electrified single-track line has been transferred to the public-private Sanriku Railway and now forms the central section of the 163km Rias Line, which follows the coast from Kuji in the north to Sakari in the south.

The Kuji - Miyako and Kamaishi - Sakari sections of the route operated independently pending the restoration of the Miyako - Kamaishi stretch, which prior to the tsunami on March 11 2011 was operated by JR East as part of the Yamada Line from Morioka.
