The initial 110km section between Tuk Meas, south of the capital Phnom Penh, and Samrong was completed in 2010. Trains can operate at speeds of up to 60km/h and the line has a maximum axleload of 20 tonnes.

New container terminals at Sihanoukville Port and Samrong will be commissioned next year. In the meantime, existing loading areas will be used for intermodal operations.

The project is being supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which expects the railway to capture around 40% of freight traffic between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, easing the pressure on the congested highway.

TRR is a joint venture between Toll Group, Australia and Cambodia's Royal Group and was awarded the 30-year concession to operate the country's 603km network in June 2009.
