Stage 2 will involve doubling 8km of track, upgrading signalling and removing two level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway to increase the frequency and reliability of services. It is part of a larger $A 1bn ($US 764m) upgrade to the line.

The level crossing removals will reduce congestion and improve safety for the 70 trains and approximately 36,000 vehicles that use the crossings each day.

Expressions of interest for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Stage 2 close in March.

“This project will provide significant benefits for passengers along our state’s busiest regional rail line - delivering five trains every hour at peak times for South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds commuters,” says Ms Jacinta Allan, Victoria’s minister for transport infrastructure.
