Incofer awarded CRRC Qingdao Sifang a $US 32.7m contract at the end of 2018 to supply eight two-car DMUs for suburban services in the capital San Jose. The trains are due to arrive in Costa Rica in the second half of 2020.

During recent technical meetings in China, CRRC and Incofer agreed to increase the number of seats in each car from 24 to 36 without increasing the cost of the order. Each train will accommodate 372 passengers, more than double the current fleet of class 2400 DMUs, which were acquired secondhand from Spain.

The new trains will feature air-conditioning, LED passenger information screens, spaces for two wheelchairs, and panoramic windows.
