THE Brenner Base Tunnel Company (BBT), which is overseeing construction of the 64km base tunnel between Italy and Austria, has appointed a consortium to provide engineering design services for railway systems.

The ISIE consortium is led by Italian State Railways’ (FS) engineering consultancy, Italferr, and also includes Systra-SWS Engineering, ILF Consulting Engineers Austria, and EUT Engineering.

The contract is worth €26.6m and tasks will include updating the final design of the railway systems that will be deployed during the fitting-out phase of the tunnel project. This will include reviewing and updating project documentation originally approved in 2008 to align with current regulations. The consortium will also support BBT during the subsequent procurement of systems.

Italferr says the cross-border element poses the project’s greatest challenge. It highlights compliance with the technical standards of the Italian and Austrian railway networks as well as European technical specifications, along with the high technical complexity of deploying systems in the dual-bore tunnel.

The contract was awarded following an unsuccessful appeal lodged by another bidder.
